Nature was the source of inspiration for all Ruskin’s ideas and a comfort to him in times of difficulty. Ruskin wrote ‘to see clearly is poetry, prophecy and religion, all in one’. Nature, seen clearly, revealed God’s fingerprint and was a means to understanding the divine. From his childhood Ruskin observed the minutiae of nature closely, studying plants, rocks and shells with both a scientific and artistic eye.
